His transformative memoir, Maria’s Scarf, chronicles his life as the biracial son of a Mexican immigrant, growing up in Compton, California. His resilient single mother raised seven children and relocated her family over thirty times, and at one point, they lived out of their car.
After becoming a follower of Christ and transforming from a homeless kid to Zoro, he became one of the world’s most respected and celebrated drummers. But music is not where he finds his identity.
Along with life on the road with music icons such as Lenny Kravitz, Frankie Valli, New Edition, and Bobby Brown, Zoro has preached the gospel of Jesus Christ and ministered encouragement worldwide for over four decades.
Whether sharing hope with inmates at San Quentin prison or bringing truth and love to impoverished children in third-world nations, college students across the United States, and the rich and famous around the globe, Zoro continues to share his faith and life lessons.
Zoro has been a speaker with Compassion International, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, The Head Start Organization, Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and The White House Fatherhood Champions of Change program. From 2019 to 2023, he was staff pastor at Bayside Church in Roseville, CA, serving as a teacher, mentor, and evangelist under the leadership of Pastor Ray Johnston.

Zoro is a cultural Gospel influencer who is equal parts evangelist, teacher, encourager, and musician. The driving force behind all he does is a burning passion to see lives transformed through the power of Jesus! In 2009, Zoro established Zoro International Ministries, Inc., a certified non-profit 501(c)(3) Christian ministry. Since then, he has worked tirelessly in myriad ways to expand the kingdom of God. Zoro is an ordained minister who has been married for 29 years. He and his wife Renée have raised two exceptional children, now 24 and 22. At his core, Zoro is a messenger, an infectious man of great conviction who leaves an indelible mark wherever he goes.
