To live with intention one must approach life like a gourmet chef of a world-renowned five star restaurant. From the selection of the raw ingredients to the way the food it’s prepared, so much thought goes into every aspect of a posh dining experience. In that chic setting, everything from the ambiance and table setting, to how the meal is presented is planned out with excruciating detail.
When the food arrives at your table it is an event, not just another meal. It becomes immediately evident that a highly skilled staff has worked together to present this amazing meal with a lot of love, care and intension. Nothing of excellence ever comes together without being intentional. On the contrary, a cafeteria cook who’s preparing a meal for five hundred inmates at a state penitentiary is most likely not going to put forth the same kind of effort into that meal preparation as the chef in the five-star restaurant.
Today many people approach life like the uninspired minimum wage food server who takes very little pride in their job. This is the type of person who gets your order wrong at the fast food window and then gives it to you with a bad attitude.
But just because someone doesn’t earn a lot of money doesn’t mean they shouldn’t do their absolute best and take pride in their work. More than anything, the work ethic a person displays is a reflection of their character. Doing excellent work should never hinge on the amount one is getting paid, or even whether or not they like the job. It has to do with integrity and the conviction of one’s heart. Employees of low paying jobs who give a stellar effort are indeed among the minority. Truthfully though, why should we allow ourselves to feel good at the end of the day unless we know we gave it our very best.
Many of us fool ourselves into believing when we get a really great paying job that we love, that suddenly we’ll give our best effort. Unfortunately, if you don’t train yourself to work hard in the low paying and perhaps somewhat unfulfilling jobs, you won’t magically know how to work hard when you land the dream job.
You must train yourself to operate with a level of excellence wherever you’re stationed in life. The key is to be intentional about all you do, but without being so intense that you rub people the wrong way, and there is a fine line between the two. When you approach everything you endeavor to do with a sense of urgency and intention, and give importance to even the smallest of things, it will only be a matter of time before that comes to the attention of those who are in a position to elevate you!
